Kerala Muslim Jamaath Demands New District with Muvattupuzha as HQ

The Kerala Muslim Jamaath, a prominent community organization, is calling for the division of the Ernakulam district to create a new administrative area. They suggest that Muvattupuzha should be the center of this new district.

Why do they want a new district?

The group believes that Ernakulam has grown so much that a single administration can no longer manage it fairly. They argue that:

  • Population changes and new social needs make a split necessary.
  •  A new district would help ensure that development and resources are spread more evenly across the region.
  • They also suggested that Malappuram, another large district, might need to be split for similar reasons.

Other key goals for the region

During a press meeting in Kochi, leaders of the group highlighted other urgent issues they want the government to fix:

  1. Education: Turning Ernakulam into a top-tier hub for schools and colleges.
  2. Drugs: Fighting the spread of illegal drugs that are hurting young people.
  3. Environment: Protecting the Periyar River from pollution and damage.
  4. Healthcare: Improving the services and management at the Government Medical College in Kalamassery.

The leaders also spoke about the Marad communal clashes, a tragic event from Kerala’s history.

Sayyid Ibrahimul Khaleel Al Bukhari (a leader of the group) said people should stop bringing up these old conflicts.

He argued that talking about them now only reopens old wounds and does not help society move forward.

This was a response to recent political comments that suggested such violence could happen again.

What happens next?

The Kerala Muslim Jamaath recently finished a state-wide tour called the Kerala Yatra to listen to people's problems.

They plan to take all their findings and suggestions to the state government soon to push for these changes.
